Start with anchors

Pick three to four daily anchors (breakfast, lunch, dinner, bedtime). Everything else flexes around them. This is the skeleton that keeps the day from dissolving.

Block, do not minute

Plan in 60 to 90 minute blocks rather than 15 minute slots. Younger children especially do better with topical blocks than rigid clock-watching.

Build in margin

A schedule with zero buffer breaks the first time someone gets sick. Leave 30 minutes of unscheduled time per day as a safety valve.

The weekly rhythm

  • One day a week as a "loose" day (field trips, deep projects, catching up)
  • One half-day for the whole family activity
  • Five short academic mornings
